Is there a standard size of solar panels?

solar panel sizeWhen solar energy first started to become popular, there were many manufacturers who battled over what the “standard” size of solar panels should be. There are many factors to consider, such as how they will be installed, the weight of the panel on the roof, and whether or not they will require reinforcements during the installation process.

The battle waged on, and fortunately, an excellent standard size was finally determined. Today most companies offer a standard solar panel size, which is 65″x40″. We’ve found this to be an excellent fit for most residential solar installations, although some commercial properties opt for the larger format for their panels. Even so, 90% of our panels are the standard size because there are many benefits associated with these specifications.

Weight Per Square Foot

One of the questions many homeowners ask about solar panel dimensions is, What is the weight per square foot? Understandably, their primary concern is about the added amount of weight that will be on the roof, and whether or not this extra weight could cause damage to the roof before the solar panels reached their life expectancy. Fortunately, the added weight to your roof is not an issue at all. In fact, with standard solar panel sizes, you can expect that the weight distribution will be roughly two pounds per square foot. This is exceptional and it offers you the peace of mind you need when you’re trying to decide whether or not solar panels are the right choice for you and your family.

No Reinforcements Required

In the past, solar panel reinforcements were required for many residential and commercial installations because the panels themselves were so heavy, the roof was unable to hold the additional weight. The good news is that over time, improved technology has been put into place that has drastically improved the efficiency of these types of panels. You will be happy to know that you won’t need any additional reinforcements when you install the standard size solar panels. This preserves the aesthetics of your home, and it also saves you from having to invest in costly reconstruction.
